Primary Young Musician of the Year 2018

ABC International School, BVIS and BIS came together to celebrate the musical gifts in our Primary Young Musician of the Year Competition 2018.

Children from across ABC International School, BVIS and BIS have all taken part in first round auditions, semi-finals and then on Tuesday 16th October they took part in the final for the Young Musician Competition, an annual celebration of music from our younger soloists.                                                                                                                                                    The Primary Young Musician of the Year 2018 Competition has grown this year to include our sister FOBISIA school ABC. The competition started with only BIS almost 8 years ago, we added BVIS in 2016 and this year invited ABC International School to join the celebration of music. Each child has had to go through two rounds of auditions to make it to the grand finale, which was held on Tuesday 16th October in the BIS Secondary Theatre. From the first to the last round nearly three hundred children have taken part across the three schools but only fifteen made it to the final performance. Our judges, Ms Georgina Hardiman (Head of Secondary Music at BVIS), Mr Gareth Groves (Head of Visual and Performing Arts at ABC) and Mr Ian Alexander (Director of Music at BIS), had a challenging decision to make and had many conversations about who should win the prestigious title of Young Musician of the Year 2018.

Our young performers excelled on the piano, guitar, ukulele, violin and cello and for the first time ever, the kit drum too. We heard music from Schubert, Handel, Mozart and Shostakovich. Our audience was thrilled to also hear music from our two previous winners Anya Chakrabarty from 2016 playing on her violin and Caitlin Chua from 2017 performing confidently on her cello. A huge well done to our finalists: Wei Jie (Bon) Ng, Bao Quyen (BQ) Nguyen, Bach LUU, Bach LUU, Tuong Anh Ngo, Harry Zhang, Quang Hien (Henry) Bui, Lilly Lee, Zhen Yang Chew, TaeHwan Shin, Catherine Ko, and Duc Tri Tran. These young performers have worked incredibly hard to get to this final stage of the competition and have also shown wonderful musicianship in their support of each other. Special congratulations go to our top three performers who this year are; Khang Nguyen (ABC) who came third and performed a solo on the kit drum; Dolly Nguyen (BIS) who came second overall and performed expertly on the piano; and our winner of the 2018 Young Musician of the Year Competition Johnny Nguyen (BIS) who performed the very mature and emotional piece of Nocturne in C# minor by Chopin.

Well done to everyone who’s taken part and I look forward to hearing many more entries again next year. Thank you to all those who have supported and hopefully we can continue to share in the delights of our children as they continue to grow as marvellous musicians.

Year 6 Blues Performances

Children in Year 6 have been learning about the Blues. We've been listening to 'Blue Monk' by Thelonious Monk, one of our Juilliard set works, for inspiration. We're now able to play an accompaniment, improvise and show a clear structure. What do you think about our performances?

FOBISIA Youth Choir & Orchestra of HCMC Concert - Across the Universe

Two years ago, the FOBISIA Music teachers in HCMC were lamenting about the lack of Youth Choir and Youth Orchestra opportunities for our young musicians within the city. Rather than sit back and accept this situation, we chose to organise an annual event whereby the three FOBISIA Schools in HCMC (ABCIS, BIS & BVIS) could work together to create such an opportunity for our students. Last year, we formed a Youth Choir who performed the Asian premiere of 'Zimbe'  alongside the International Choir and Orchestra of HCMC.

This year however, we decided to go one step further and create a Youth Orchestra too. Our concert last week showed just what can amazing music can be made when we all collaborate and work together to achieve one combined outcome.

The title of the concert was "Across the Universe' and featured a host of items all along the theme of the planets, outer space and the universe. All of the instrumentalists and vocalists performed wonderfully and the Music staff from all three school are extremely proud of what you were able to produce in such a short space of time. Well done to everyone who performed!

Concert in the Cosmos

After weeks of rehearsing and preparation, 18 very excited BIS Primary children met at the Junior Campus on Thursday 15th March ready to travel to Singapore for the 2018 FOBISIA Primary Music Festival hosted by Tanglin Trust School.
The weekend started with a fun trip to Gardens by the Bay where we saw some beautiful flowers, plants and even a rainforest. We even got to balance precariously on some high walkways before buying lots of souvenirs in the gift shop. Then it was straight over to Tanglin School where the hard work began and we started rehearsing in earnest to prepare for Sunday’s ‘Concert In The Cosmos’ celebration concert. It was wonderful to see children from different schools rehearsing together, making friends and showing great dedication and perseverance.
As well as hours of rehearsals we found time to enjoy workshops where we got to dance, listen to some awesome jazz and paint glow in the dark stars, planets and moons ready for our show stopping finale in the concert. In the evening we enjoyed watching all the schools perform for each other at FOBISIA’s Got Talent. One of the highlights had to be our amazing BIS performance of We Will Rock You.
The highlight of the weekend was the space themed celebration concert when all of the hard work paid off as we dazzled the audience with beautiful singing, playing and even a guest appearance from R2D2. A truly memorable performance. To round off the festival we enjoyed a disco with a delicious gala dinner and a final chance to say goodbye to our new friends before an early wake up call for our flight back to Ho Chi Minh City.
Ms Beth and Mr Jon were very impressed by the children’s high standards of behaviour and hard work throughout the weekend – we were very, very proud of all of you.

Beethoven's 5th Symphony: Juilliard Curriculum

Today our year 6 classes have been learning about the first movement of Beethoven's most famous and epic symphony: the 5th. We have been discussing Italian terms like crescendo, forte and piano, and have imitated gradual and sudden crescendos while using excerpts from the music.

Year 6 Atmospheric Music

The children in Year 6 at AP1 have been learning about Atmospheric Music - the music that happens in the background of a film to make the listener feel a certain way. We've used the Garageband app on the iPads to record a story and then create our own compositions using both the pre-recorded loops and our own live sounds.

Click here to hear our compositions and don't forget to comment!
